Let’s talk about my favorite multimedia principle: contiguity.
We, as humans, create experiences and memories–and gain new knowledge–through synapses, which are connections between neurons that aid memory retention and knowledge retention. Basically, they help us learn! Contiguity is a multimedia principle that advises e-learning developers to place stimuli in close proximity to each other if you wish to establish a relationship between these stimuli (e.g. a lightbulb icon and either the on-screen text or narrated phrase: “lightbulb”).
You should utilize the contiguity principle, because it will allow your learners to make a meaningful connection between your graphics and your instructional content, in an efficient and effective manner. The key psychological concept here is meaningful synaptic connections.
Thanks so much for learning with me!
